Napoleon Bonaparte was a military and political leader who rose to power during the French Revolution in the late 18th century. He was born on August 15, 1769, in Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. Napoleon was educated in France and joined the French army as an artillery officer in 1785.
